The Texans are likely to soon name Lovie Smith as their next head coach. Houston needs another head coach after firing David Culley at the conclusion of the 2021-2022 regular season. A deal is expected to be done by the end of the day or tomorrow.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Monday.
The #Texans are moving towards naming Lovie Smith their head coach for 2022, sources tell @TomPelissero, @MikeGarafolo and me.
No deal is done, but it’s headed that way.

Culley was fired after posting a 4-13 record in his only season in Houston. It was his first opportunity as a head coach at age 65. The firing came as surprise to most, being that he earned four wins, regardless of Houston’s roster being considered one of the worst in the league. He also did not have Deshaun Watson at quarterback, as he refused to play for the team and was battling legal issues.
Smith spent 2021 as the Texans’ defensive coordinator, so the hire will be in-house. He was named Coach of the Year in 2005, after going 13-3 with the Bears. That 13-3 Bears squad went all the way to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Indianapolis Colts. Smith was head coach in Chicago from 2004 until 2012. After being fired he spent two years as the Buccaneers’ head coach, then five seasons as the University of Illinois’ head coach.
