A recent report from SB Nation about the Steelers meeting with many free agents suggests the team is building a “secret roster” for the 2021 season.
Some of the notable free agents seen meeting with the Steelers are Ryan Kerrigan (signed with Philadelphia Eagles) Malik Hooker and Trai Turner. All three of which are players on defense.
News of the Steelers talking to these agents is surprising since they have strong defensive players such as T.J Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick. So the question remains to fans and sports commentators alike. What are the Steelers planning?
Writer for SB Nation, Michael Beck, thinks he has an idea.
“Perhaps the Steelers are getting on top of their roster flaws by filling these holes before an injury can occur. In doing so the team will have quality players that know the playbook can immediately step up in the event of an injury.” Beck wrote in his commentary. He also added that the Steeler’s defensive starters still have weaknesses that they need to work on.
While the Steelers might have posted out on Kerrigan, they still have several defensive free agents to choose from.
Who Will End Up in Pittsburgh Next?
One player that many Steeler fans were hoping to join the team, was J.J Watt the brother of T.J Watt.
T.J is one of the many breakout stars who grabbed the public’s attention during his time with the team. That’s rare for most defensive players in the NFL. However, J.J signed with the Arizona Cardinals for two years to fan disappointment.
However, there’s one option the Steelers can do, if their goal is to improve their defense for the 2021 season. Trade for cornerback Stephon Gilmore.
Gilmore is currently unhappy with his contract with the New England Patriots. If the Steelers do a similar trade for Gilmore, as they did with Fitzpatrick, the Steeler will add a deadly weapon to their already impressive arsenal.
