Before he was a head coach, O’Connell was a third round pick of the New England Patriots in 2008. He bounced around the league serving in backup and practice squad quarterback roles for five seasons before being released and never picked up again in 2012.
He began his coaching career with the Browns in 2015, moving to the 49ers in 2016, then holding three different positions for the Washington Commodores from 2017 to 2019. The Los Angeles Rams hired O’Connell as their offensive coordinator in 2020, serving until the Vikings’ announce his hire on Thursday. He and the Rams won Super Bowl LVI in 2022.
