The Indianapolis Colts are bringing back one of their best linebackers. E.J. Speed and the Colts have agreed to terms on a two-year, $8 million to have him return for the 2022-2023 season. He will remain with the only NFL team for which he’s played.
NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reported the news on Monday.
Speed was a fifth round draft selection by the Colts back in 2019 out of Tarleton State University. During his five years in college, he was named to the Second Team All-LSC twice (2016 and 2018). He redshirted his sophomore year, allowing him to stay in school for five years.
In 2022, Speed played in all 17 games, starting five of them. He set career marks in passes defended (two), forced fumbles (two) and tackles (63). Speed also managed to grab his first career sack last season. He’ll likely be able to take on a bigger role next season, as he played only 28 percent of defensive snaps in 2022.
