The Cleveland Browns have hired Bubba Ventrone as their assistant head coach/special teams coordinator. Ventrone comes from the Indianapolis Colts, where he was only the special teams coordinator. The assistant head coach moniker made it possible for him to switch jobs.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Thursday.
Ventrone, whose real first name is Raymond, played in the league from 2005-2014 after going undrafted in the 2005 NFL Draft. He played for the Patriots (twice), Jets, Browns and 49ers. As a defensive back, Ventrone finished his playing career with 64 tackles, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.
His coaching career began with the Patriots in 2015, as an assistant special teams coach. He won Super Bowl LI as a coach in New England. He, then, became the special teams coordinator for the Colts from 2018-2022. Now, he joins a former team of his for the 2023 season.
