The 2022 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Roger McCreary 2022 NFL Draft Profile.
Roger McCreary Background
Position:Â Cornerback
Size:Â 5-foot-11, 190 pounds
Class:Â Senior
2021 stats:Â 49 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 2 interceptions, 14 passes defended, 1 fumble recovery, 1 touchdown
McCreary was a two-year starter for Auburn at cornerback and performed well. Now, he is heading to the 2022 NFL Draft.
Out of high school, McCreary was a three-star prospect who stayed in-state to play for the Tigers. He played a little as a freshman registering five tackles. His role increased in his sophomore campaign, as he had nine passes defended and one interception. McCreary finally cracked the starting lineup in 2020, producing six passes defended and three interceptions along the way. The Tigers went 6-5, finishing the season with a loss in the Citrus Bowl. In 2021, McCreary had his best season with 14 passes defended and two interceptions. Auburn won six games again, but lost in the Birmingham Bowl.
After four solid seasons at Auburn, McCreary is making the move to the next level. He is currently projected to be a first or second-round pick.
Roger McCreary Strengths
McCreary is good in press man-to-man coverage. He understands leverage and competes hard. His ability to mirror and stick with his man throughout a route is very impressive. He suffocates routes and doesn’t let wide receivers get much free space.
He has the ability to make plays on the ball. McCreary is aggressive in coverage and that goes all the way until the end of the rep. He will make good breaks on the ball when it is in the air and can get pass breakups. He also can intercept passes and return them for better field position.
There is some potential versatility to McCreary’s game, as he held up well against top competition in the SEC on the outside. He also has the tools to move inside to slot corner. McCreary presses well and has solid quickness to cover slot receivers.
Roger McCreary Weaknesses
McCreary is a little small for an NFL cornerback. He measured in at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds. McCreary needs to add some more play strength to complement his playing style, as he is very aggressive. His arms were also shorter than the NFL average at 28 and 7/8 inches.
Because of his size limitations, McCreary struggles with bigger receivers. He can be overpowered at times and while he is normally good at attacking the catch point, McCreary can’t keep up with the catch radius of some bigger receivers. A move to the slot may give McCreary more favorable matchups.
He is better in man coverage than he is in zone coverage and that is mostly because of his eye discipline. It doesn’t help in man-to-man either, as he needs to balance his eyes better between his man and the ball, but makes it extremely tough to cover in zone.
Projected Draft Range:Â First Round Pick-Second Round Pick
