The 2024 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Joe Alt 2024 NFL Draft Profile.
Joe Alt Background
Position: Offensive Tackle
School: Notre Dame
Size: 6-foot-8, 322 pounds
Class: Junior
2023 stats: First Team All-American
Alt is a former tight end who played well for Notre Dame over the last three seasons. Now he is in the 2024 NFL Draft.
As a four-star recruit out of Minnesota, Alt signed with Notre Dame in the class of 2021. He played both tight end and on the offensive line during the 2021 season, being named a Freshman All-American in the process. In 2022, he started full-time on the offensive line at left tackle. His play earned him a spot as a First-Team All-American and Notre Dame went 9-4. For the 2023 season, Alt was a First Team All-American again. His play helped the Fighting Irish improve to 10 wins.
Following the 2023 season, Alt declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a top-10 pick.
Joe Alt Strengths
Alt has the prototypical size for the offensive tackle position at the NFL level. He stands 6-foot-8 and 322 pounds, which will make him one of the bigger tackles in the class. With his size comes good length and strength, which helps him sustain his blocks.
As a former tight end, Alt has great athleticism and flexibility for a tackle. He has good quickness at the snap of the ball. Alt can get to the second level as a run blocker and can mirror well as a pass blocker, showing good movement skills. He has good flexibility to handle bendy edge rushers and keep them in front.
He is a great pass blocker, rarely giving up sacks or pressures during his college career. As mentioned, Alt has the movement and flexibility to mirror pass rushers. In addition, he has a decent anchor to handle power rushers. Alt is great at recognizing when stunts and twists are coming and knows which guy to pick up to eliminate pressure threats from getting to the quarterback.
Joe Alt Weaknesses
With his great size also comes some weaknesses. Alt can lose the leverage battle a lot. He needs to keep his pad level low to help block defenders who usually have way better natural leverage. When his pad level gets too high, he can get off balance and defenders can win.
His run blocking is solid, but there are times when he can finish blocks better. He usually can finish blocking his assignment and clear holes, but a little more tenacity could really go a long way. Alt finishing his blocks could allow more room for backs to run through or let him get to another block downfield.
While he has a solid anchor, he can lose some ground at times to power rushers. He usually is able to recover and not give up pressure, but getting knocked off balance happens a little too often. Keeping his pad level low will help him deal with bull rushers.
