The Aggies won eight games including the Texas Bowl that season. He improved his production in a COVID-shortened 2020 season with 46 receptions for 506 yards and six touchdowns. Wydermyer has a great frame for an NFL tight end. He stands at 6-foot-5 and 255 pounds, which is a great starting point for a prospect. His size makes him tough to match up with for linebackers and safeties. He also has a great catch radius and that is partially due to his frame. Wydermyer could add some strength, but he looks like he has a frame that can handle extra muscle.
With his good frame, Wydermyer has good run after the catch ability. He has good vision and uses his strength to stay on his feet. Wydermyer keeps his feet moving and is hard to tackle, helping him take decent gains and turn them into bigger ones.
His hands are very good, as Wydermyer rarely had focus drops. On top of that, he has plenty of contested catches on tape. He can also go up and high-point the ball over defenders. If a ball is thrown off frame, Wydermyer has shown the ability to haul those in as well and he even shows good body control while making catches near the sideline.
Jalen Wydermyer Weaknesses
Wydermyer showed he could block inside linebackers and defensive backs. but was asked to block defensive linemen and 3-4 outside linebackers too much. He didn’t show the ability to handle these players in one on one situations. That is a common theme for several tight ends, but Wydermyer can improve his technique to win more of these matchups.
He isn’t the greatest athlete. Wydermyer has questionable longspeed and doesn’t change direction well. He is a solid security blanket and jump ball catcher, but may not be much more at the next level. His pro day workout was not great and really hurt his draft stock.
His route running can also be improved. While he finds soft spots against zone coverage, he needs to run his routes crisper. This is hard for him, as he needs to gear down to change directions. Working on selling his routes will help him create more separation.
Projected Draft Range: Fifth Round Pick-Undrafted Free Agent
