Jalen Tolbert Background

Position: Wide Receiver

Size: 6-foot-1, 194 pounds

Class: Redshirt Junior

2021 stats: 82 receptions, 1,474 yards, 18.0 yards per catch, eight touchdowns

Tolbert was an unknown player out of high school, but had a fantastic college career. Now, he is heading to the NFL Draft.

As a two-star recruit out of Alabama, Tolbert decided to stay in-state and play for South Alabama. He was injured his first year on campus and redshirted. As a redshirt freshman in 2018, Tolbert caught five passes for 60 yards. The next season, he improved with 27 receptions for 521 yards and six touchdowns. South Alabama struggled with a 2-10 record. Tolbert took another step forward in 2020 with 64 receptions for 1,085 yards and eight touchdowns. The Jaguars improved to a 4-7 record. For his final season of college football, Tolbert posted 82 catches for 1,474 yards and eight touchdowns. He helped the Jaguars go 5-7.

After four seasons with South Alabama, Tolbert has been training for the NFL. He is currently projected to be a second to fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Jalen Tolbert Strengths

Tolbert is a great route runner, who runs a wide variety of routes. He knows how to change speeds to gain separation. When he gets in and out of his cuts, it is smooth and he doesn’t lose speed. He has solid releases at the line of scrimmage and will be able to get open at the next level.

He is a solid athlete for the position. Tolbert has good quickness and speed. On top of that, he has good body control and jumping ability. Most players from small schools don’t have the greatest athletic ability to match up, but Tolbert will not be punching above his weight and he proved it when he played against SEC competition.

His ability to run after the catch is also great. Tolbert uses his good acceleration, agility and speed to run to open space. He has good vision and can really create after the catch. Tolbert can take a short screen all the way to the endzone.

Jalen Tolbert Weaknesses

Tolbert does have some drops. Some of them come from a lack of focus where he should haul them in. He also has trouble with some contested catches over the middle. Tolbert can improve his hands with work at the NFL level and will need to.

He can also add to his game by adding strength. If he adds muscle, he can be more physical with his route running and make more contested catches. He can also add more as a run blocker. At just 194 pounds, he can add at least 10 pounds of muscle to fill out his frame.

As mentioned, his run blocking is hot and cold. He sometimes doesn’t engage and other times will put in the effort. Improving his effort and strength is a start, but he will also need to work on his technique to sustain blocks against NFL corners.
