Jalen Carter Strengths
Carter has a great build for an interior defensive lineman. He is 6-foot-3 and 310 pounds, which is ample enough to play on the interior. With the size, comes great strength, especially in his upper body. He also has good length to help him shed blocks. He will likely measure well at the combine and will fit right in at the NFL level.
His athleticism for his size is elite. He shows good burst at the snap of the ball, which gives him a good start to the play. He moves quickly, both in a straight line and laterally. For an interior player, he has great flexibility and can actually bend around the edge if lined up there. He can also be effective on stunts and twists because of his athleticism.
During his time at Georgia, Carter was extremely disruptive, even if it didn’t show up in the box score. He attacked gaps well, which can mess up a whole play. Carter usually commands double teams and sometimes beats them. As a pass rusher, he can really push the pocket from the interior.
Jalen Carter Weaknesses
Carter needs to add more pass-rush moves to diversify his game. His pass-rush moves can be predictable and a lot of times he wins with just his athleticism and power. Having a better plan to get after the quarterback will make him a more successful pass rusher as a professional than as a college player.
His pad level can get too high too often. Carter gets out of his stance quickly and can sometimes stand too straight up. When he does this, he loses some of his power and he can be stalled by his opponents. This also causes him to lose balance at times. He needs to focus on staying low and using more of his power.
On a relative basis, Carter is inexperienced. He only started one year at Georgia. This inexperience shows up on tape, as his technique could be improved. His hand could have better timing and placement when he strikes. He also can sometimes take bad angles to the football. More reps will only help Carter with these things.
