London presented one of the bigger matchup problems in college football over the last three seasons. Now, he is in the 2022 NFL Draft.
As a four-star prospect, London decided to stay in-state and play for USCÂ for his collegiate career. In his true freshman season, he registered 39 receptions for 567 yards and five touchdowns. He helped the team go 8-5 that season. During his sophomore season, London hauled in 33 passes for 502 receiving yards and three touchdowns in a shortened six-game season due to COVID. The Trojans were able to go 5-1 before opting out of a bowl game. In 2021, London had 88 receptions for 1,084 yards and seven touchdowns in eight games before missing the rest of the season with a fractured ankle. USC struggled down the stretch without London, finishing with just four wins on the season.
Following the injury, London decided to enter the 2022 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Drake London Strengths
London has one of the best frames for a wide receiver in the 2022 NFL Draft. He is listed at 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds, which makes him much bigger than many of the corners he faces. His size is something he uses well too, as he makes sure defenders can’t get around him to make plays on the ball. He also has a huge catch radius, which he uses to his advantage as well.
As a former high school basketball player, London uses that well on the football field to make contested catches. Quarterbacks can just throw it up to London and often times he will come down with it, even if there are defenders in the area. He high points the ball well like a rebounder in basketball and can come up with big plays because of it. His contested catch ability does extend to him going over the middle as well. Teams should target him in the red zone to take advantage of his ability to win jump balls.
His versatility could also come into play. At USC, London lined up outside and in the slot so that the Trojans could get him more targets. On the outside, he is already a mismatch, but as a bigger wide receiver in the slot, London might be even more of a mismatch. Teams can move him around to generate more production and London will deliver.
Drake London Weaknesses
London isn’t going to create much separation with his route-running. He occasionally throws in a good double move, but for the most part, he is slow getting in and out of his breaks. London also doesn’t change his speed much, while running his routes. In order to be successful in the NFL, London will have to continue winning jump balls like he did at the collegiate level.
His long speed is also going to come into question. Part of the reason London doesn’t separate is that a lot of the corners he goes up against are faster. This not only hurts him in this area, but also limits his run-after-the catch-ability. He can pick up extra yards because he is bigger and harder to tackle, but isn’t a threat to take it all the way because he lacks speed and elusiveness in the open field.
For a bigger receiver, London didn’t show great run blocking in college. London didn’t always show great effort and defenders were able to shed and limit big plays. He has the size to become a very good blocker, but will need to work on his effort and technique.
Projected Draft Range:Â First Round Pick
