McBride was one of the most productive running backs in college football over the last few seasons. Now he is in the 2023 NFL Draft.
As a three-star recruit out of Florida, McBride signed with UAB in the class of 2020. In six games played as a true freshman, McBride rushed for 439 yards and four touchdowns. He became more of a workhorse back in 2021 with 1,371 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. His play helped the Blazers go 9-4 with a win in the Independence Bowl. For the 2022 season, McBride rushed for 1,713 yards and 19 touchdowns. He led the Blazers to a 6-6 regular season record.
After opting out of the Bahamas Bowl, McBride declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. He is a projected day-two pick.
DeWayne McBride Strengths
McBride has good size for an NFL running back at 5-foot-10 and 209 pounds. His size gives him good strength. He is able to show his power in short-yardage situations and came through consistently in those cases. McBride has good contact balance and keeps his legs moving. He can run through arm tackles.
He has solid vision to find the optimal hole to run through. McBride is quick to see the hole and then hits it. When he is in the open field, he is able to find space and run to it to pick up maximum yardage on a play. His vision should allow him to be productive in all blocking schemes.
Even though he has some power, McBride has the ability to elude defenders as well. He has solid burst and has the agility to juke defenders. McBride runs hard and is hard to take down under normal circumstances, but when he adds in jukes, it makes him even tougher to tackler.
DeWayne McBride Weaknesses
McBride will not provide much receiving production for an NFL team. He had just five catches for 29 yards during his college career. McBride will be tough to keep in the game in passing situations. He will need to work on his route-running and catching to even start to be a threat in the passing game.
He needs to show that he can take care of the football better. McBride fumbled too much during his college career and needs to keep the ball high and tight. Ball security is job security and if he continues to fumble it could be hard for him to see the field.
His patience as a runner is inconsistent. There are times where he doesn’t wait for a hole to open before running into defenders. Other times he is too patient and needs to get through the hole faster. Working on his timing and patience behind the line of scrimmage could make him more consistent.
Projected Draft Range: Second Round Pick-Third Round Pick
Draft Grade: Second-Round Pick
