Nix is one of the most experienced players in the draft class after spending time with two schools. He is now in the 2024 NFL Draft.
As a four-star recruit in the class of 2019, Nix signed with Auburn where his dad played. He spent three seasons at Auburn as the starting quarterback. During his time as a Tiger, he passed for 7,251 yards, 39 touchdowns and 16 interceptions on 59.4 percent completion. Following the 2021 season, he decided to transfer to Oregon. He created an impact for the Ducks immediately, passing for 3,593 yards, 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 71.9 percent completion. his play helped the Ducks win 10 games during the 2022 season. Nix returned in 2023 and was a Heisman Finalist after passing for 4,508 yards, 45 touchdowns and three interceptions on 77.4 percent completion. The Ducks won 12 games with Nix at quarterback in 2023.
After playing in the Fiesta Bowl for the Ducks, Nix exhausted his college eligibility. He is now projected to be a day-two pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Bo Nix Strengths
Nix capitalizes on making short throws. He gets the ball out quickly with a compact delivery. Nix has good short accuracy and his ability to get the ball to playmakers quickly allows for them to be able to run after the catch and make big plays. Any offense that utilizes quick throws could suit Nix.
He has solid athletic ability for the quarterback position. Nix has the ability to do some damage on the ground and pick up yardage. His athletic ability also allows him to evade pressure and make plays out of structure. When he is out of the pocket, he keeps his eyes downfield, which allows him to make plays with his arm or his legs.
His arm strength won’t be the best in the class, but Nix has a good enough arm. When asked, he can push the ball downfield. He also has shown the ability to fit the ball into tight windows. As mentioned, his ability to get the ball to his targets by putting velocity on the ball, gives them extra time to run before the defense reacts.
Bo Nix Weaknesses
Nix needs to work on going through his progressions more. At Oregon, he showed improvement statistically, but a lot of that was based on operating in a one-read system. When asked to go through progressions or read the whole field, Nix struggled. He can sometimes stare down his receivers and force passes to his first read as well.
His decision-making also improved at Oregon, but there are still times when he puts the ball in dangerous spots. He doesn’t always see linebackers or safeties in the middle of the field and will throw the ball in an area where they can make a play on it. Nix also can be too greedy to make plays and have too much faith in his arm, which puts the ball in compromising positions.
There are some issues when he faces pressure as well. Nix didn’t have to face as much pressure over the last two seasons, as he threw the ball to his first read a lot and had a talented offensive line in front of him. When pressure did get through, he often would throw off his back foot. Conversely, he also tends to leave the pocket too early rather than letting plays develop.
