Edey developed into a star at the college basketball level over four years at Purdue. He is now in the 2024 NBA Draft.
As a three-star recruit out of Canada, Edey signed with Purdue. He was a reserve as a freshman, averaging 8.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Edey moved into a starting role as a sophomore, increasing his production to 14.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. There was a huge leap of improvement for Edey in his junior season, as he put up 22.3 points and 12.9 rebounds per game on his way to him winning National Player of the Year. He repeated as National Player of the year as a senior with 25.2 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. His play helped Purdue reach the National Championship Game.
Following the loss in the National Championship Game, Edey declared for the 2024 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.
Zach Edey Strengths
Edey’s size and length help make him a great rim protector. When he is guarding the ball, Edey can block shots without even leaving the floor. He deters the person he is guarding from scoring. Edey also is able to help and block shots of other players. He shows good recognition and timing to help him protect the rim.
He is the best rebounder in the class after averaging 12.2 per game last season. Edey boxes out well and can see how the ball will come off the rim. While he isn’t the most athletic jumper, he doesn’t need to be, as he can go up and get balls at their high point with ease. He rebounds well on both ends of the floor.
Over his college career, Edey really improved his post scoring. His footwork is more refined now, which he uses to his advantage. He can post up and score in one-on-one situations. Edey has a good hook shot to help him score as well.
Zach Edey Weaknesses
While his rim protection provides great value, he struggles to guard on the perimeter. If another team goes small or gets him to switch other teams will take advantage of him. His length can help him, but his limited mobility can leave him exposed.
Edey will likely never stretch the floor at the NBA level with his shooting. He doesn’t have much of a mid-range game or the ability to shoot from deep. Edey can only really be effective from the interior. His free throw percentage was 71.1 percent, so there might be room for him to improve.
He can get rebounds and start a fast break, but he rarely is a part of it. Edey won’t get up and down the floor with much pace. On defense, he can struggle to get back in transition as well. Edey is a halfcourt player.
Projected Draft Range: First Round Pick
