Luka Doncic is known as one of the best young stars in today’s NBA. Beyond that, he is regarded as one of the best players in the entire league. At the age of 24, the Slovenian superstar has been a consistent triple double machine and All-NBA First Team. Every year since his rookie season, Doncic ranks among the most favored players to win MVP voting. However, he has never actually won the award up to this point. This raises the question heading into next season: Will Luka Doncic Win the 2024 MVP Award?
Past Projections
As stated earlier, Luka Doncic has been one of the most favored players to win MVP each year since his rookie season. In fact, he was the favorite to win MVP in just his third season in the league. Last season, he was the runner up favorite to win MVP, behind only Nikola Jokic.
Not only has Doncic been favorably projected in MVP odds, but he also tends to rank amongst the top of the league in MVP voting at the end of the season. Since 2020, Doncic has ranked in the top 10 in MVP voting every year, even ranking in the top five in two of those years. He is poised to do it again this year, and maybe even win the MVP trophy.
Current Projections
According to the current MVP odds, Doncic is once again the runner-up MVP favorite behind Jokic. It’s essentially déjà vu of course what the projections for Doncic were last season. But the fact remains clear that much anticipation surrounds Doncic winning his first MVP award.
How Likely is This?
With career averages of 27.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.0 assists, it is no surprise why Doncic is considered a top 10 player in the league and is frequently favored in MVP projections. However, when it comes to winning MVP, team success carries is just as important as individual stats.
With the current team that Doncic has, the potential could range from nearing a top three seed to a Play-In team. The 2024 Western Conference is stacked with talented teams and the likelihood of the Mavericks current roster making a top two or even three seed is not very high. However, there is still a great chance that the Mavericks will end up within the top five seeding and still give Doncic strong consideration for MVP.
As for being favored behind Jokic, this is not much of a surprise. Jokic is considered by many to be the best player in the world and he is the reigning Finals MVP. He also has a better roster than Doncic which would boost his chances due to the team success aspect of MVP voting. However, there is a chance that Jokic might coast a little during the regular season after having won a championship. And there is also a great chance that Doncic may outperform Jokic this season as he nears closer to his prime.
Conclusion
Heading into the 2024 season, Doncic will certainly be an All-Star and All-NBA member if he stays healthy. His natural talent is enough to ensure that. However, in order to finally win his first MVP, Donic will need to be in shape and give 100% effort and his teammates need to step up behind him.
