The 2020 NBA Draft will be an important event for teams to build for their future. Here is the Vernon Carey 2020 NBA Draft Profile.
Background
Position:Â Center
Size:Â 6-foot-10, 270 pounds
School:Â Duke
Class:Â Freshman
Carey was one of the most coveted recruits in the 2019 recruiting class and chose to follow other good one and dones to Duke. He spent one year with the Blue Devils and is now preparing for the NBA Draft.
At Duke, Carey averaged 17.8 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game over 31 contests. One of his best performances came against California when he scored 31 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and had four blocked shots. The Blue Devils posted a 25-6 record and looked like they could compete for the National Championship before the season was canceled.
His one season at Duke ended prematurely, but Carey was able to impress during his time on campus. He is now projected to be a late first-round pick or early second-round pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.
Strengths
Carey has good size, strength and length for the NBA. He stands 6-foot-10 and weighs 270 pounds, which gives him a good build for interior play at the pro level. He also has a good wingspan that is 7-feet long. Carey can use his size to play bully ball down in the post against smaller opponents. He can also handle post play on the defensive end because of his size.
He has a diversified offensive game, which allows him to attack in a variety of ways. Carey has good post moves and can finish at the rim decently. He also has the ability to shot from the mid-range and occasionally from deep. His ability to score from all three levels will keep defenses honest. He will need to improve his outside shot a little bit, but he did shoot 38.1 percent from deep at Duke.
His rebounding is really good as well. Carey uses his body and size to his advantage by boxing out opponents and clearing space for himself and his teammates to grab rebounds. He has a good feel for where the ball is going to come off the rim and has the body control to go and get it. In this class, he’ll prove to be one of the better rebounders.
Weaknesses
Carey needs to play with more energy to really reach his potential. When he plays with aggression he is a much better player, but a lot of times he doesn’t seem to be fully engaged. He also doesn’t run the floor very well. If he can keep his energy level high, NBA teams will feel more comfortable giving him minutes.
His back to the basket game is a little out of date for today’s NBA. He can shoot from deep, with a good three-point percentage, but he didn’t attempt many threes overall. Carey took 0.3 three-point shots per game at Duke so he needs to prove he can stretch the floor on a more consistent basis. Getting more reps from the NBA three-point line will be crucial for his ability to stay on the floor longer in the NBA.
He needs to shoot better free throws to stay on the floor as well. Carey only hit 67 percent of his free throws at Duke. For a player that plays on the interior a lot, he is going to get fouled, so he’ll have to hit free throws to get the most out of his career. Because he has a good shot from deep, he should be able to improve his free throw percentage.
Projected Draft Range:Â Late First Round-Second Round Pick
