Dunn might be a lesser-known name, but he made a big impact on the defense end in college. Now he is in the 2024 NBA Draft.
As a three-star prospect from New York, Dunn signed with Virginia out of high school. He played limited minutes as a freshman, averaging 2.6 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. His role increased as a sophomore, when he averaged 8.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. Dunn helped Virginia make the NCAA Tournament in both years he was at the school, but they couldn’t get past the first round.
Following the much-improved sophomore season, Dunn declared for the 2024 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a late first or early second round pick.
Ryan Dunn Strengths
Dunn is a good perimeter defender who can really shake things up. He has solid foot quickness and good length. Dunn moves his feet and stays in front of drivers. He can switch when asked and guard multiple positions. He is the best defender in the class and his work on the perimeter is a large reason why.
Not only is Dunn a good perimeter defender, he also protects the rim well. He averaged 2.3 blocks per game last season at Virginia. Dunn has good athleticism, but more importantly knows how to help. he times his jumps well and blocks shots from the weakside. It is hard to find a player who can guard on the perimeter and block shots the way he can.
While his offensive game is limited, he can finish well. He uses his athleticism to finish at the basket. Dunn has enough ball-handling skills to straight-line drive to the basket. He can finish through contact and can be hard to stop when he is coming down the lane. Dunn also is a solid cutter.
Ryan Dunn Weaknesses
His shooting leaves a lot to be desired. Dunn shot just 20 percent from deep last season at Virginia. He won’t stretch the floor very much, which will let defenders cheat off of him. In addition, Dunn hit just 53.2 percent of his free throws last season.
Dunn can dribble decently, but really just straight-line drives. He doesn’t have the ability to create separation and get his shot. This makes him a player that has to be set up well to score on a consistent basis. His offensive game will likely be limited in the NBA.
He does a pretty good job of limiting turnovers, but Dunn can also still pass the ball a little better. Seeing the floor better will aid him in finding his teammates more. The ball isn’t in his hands a lot, but when it is, better passing can help him maximize those opportunities.
