While James Harden continues his streak of 30-point games, another player is creating a streak of their own. Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook tallied his 10th straight triple-double.
On Monday, Westbrook kept the streak alive. He finished the game with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists. He was one of two Thunder players to have a triple-double that night, as Paul George had 47 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. The Thunder beat the Portland Trailblazers 120-111.
With his latest triple-double, Westbrook set an NBA record, breaking the record of legendary NBA center Wilt Chamberlain. Chamberlain had the record for most consecutive triple-doubles in a season with nine, but Westbrook broke the record with 10.
This season, Westbrook averages 21.2 points, 11.2 assists and 11.1 rebounds per game. Last year, he averaged 25.4 points, 10.3 assists and 10.1 rebounds. In his MVP season, he averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists. Westbrook broke Oscar Robertson’s record for most triple-doubles in a season in that season. He had 42 triple-doubles that season, and Robertson had 41 in the 1961-62 season. He became the first player to average a triple-double in back-to-back seasons. Now, he could become the first player to average a triple-double for three seasons. This is a big accomplishment and could be difficult for a player to do. But, Westbrook is on the verge of accomplishing it.
The Oklahoma City Thunder are 17-6 when Westbrook has a triple-double. They have an overall record of 37-19. Russell Westbrook, along with Paul George is a big part of the Thunder’s success. Westbrook is having his worst shooting season since his rookie year, but he is still effective.
The Thunder’s next game is on Thursday when they play the New Orleans Pelicans in New Orleans. Westbrook could keep the streak going. Westbrook will likely finish the season with a triple-double and continue his streak a bit longer.
