According to The Athletic analyst Shams Charania, NBA Hall-of-Famer Ray Allen was named head coach at Gulliver Prep.
Allen is headed to Miami, Florida to become the director of basketball and boy’s varsity head coach at Gulliver Prep, the private school where his 16-year-old son Ray Allen III attends and plays on the team for. Allen has been involved with Gulliver in the past as an assistant coach for a middle school program. He should make a good head coach for the high school athletes given his talents and vast experience in the pro league.
“Coach Allen brings unparalleled expertise to the helm of our basketball programs,” the school said in a tweet.

Allen is recognized as one of the best sharpshooters in the history of basketball. The 46-year-old was part of NBA championship-winning teams in Boston in 2008 and in Miami in 2013. As a 10-time all-star, he also played for the Milwaukee Bucks and Seattle SuperSonics. Ray is still the NBA’s career leader in 3-pointers made with 2,973 — 141 more than Golden State’s Stephen Curry. To finish his basketball career, Allen was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
With Allen now becoming a high school basketball coach, not too many people saw this coming. Allen’s former college coach Jim Calhoun said that Allen’s announcement came as a surprise to him.
“Matter of fact, he goes the opposite way: ‘No, I never want to coach,’ ” Calhoun said. “I think when guys go to high school, they get a different kind of test.”
“As long as he doesn’t try to make everybody as meticulous as he was,” Calhoun noted. “He didn’t want anybody messing with his game, once he knew what he was doing. He worked hard, so if 50% of the way he worked carries over, those kids will be great kids and hard-working kids.”
Gulliver Prep, a school of about 2,200 total students, went 5-16 last season. We’ll see if Coach Allen will be able to improve on the record in the 2021-22 season.
