As the Knicks look to get to the next level in the Eastern Conference, some prominent members in the organization see Hawks guard Dejounte Murray as a good fit.
According to SNY’s Ian Begley, the Knicks view Murray as “an ideal trade target.” During the 2022 offseason, New York had interest in trading for him as they believe he would be a great fit with Jalen Brunson.
The Spurs ended up trading Murray to the Hawks, which was one of his preferred destinations along with the Knicks and Celtics.
The 27-year-old is now in his second season in Atlanta and is currently averaging 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists through 30 games.
Back in July Murray signed a four-year, $120 million extension with the Hawks but has still appeared in trade rumors. The Knicks would likely have to include a significant amount of picks as well as young players, but that’s not the only hurdle they would need to get past.
Murray’s agent is Rich Paul, the CEO of Klutch Sports Group. Due to his history with team president Leon Rose, who also was an agent and his boss at one point for the Creative Artists Agency, Paul has been reluctant to do business with the Knicks.
Bulls wing Zach LaVine is another player who is represented by Klutch. He has also appeared in lots of trade speculation recently, and reports came out that Klutch is opposed of a potential LaVine trade to the Knicks.
It is worth noting that if New York was specifically Murray’s desired destination, Paul would help make that move happen despite the ongoing feud.
There is also a possibility that he would consider changing his stance if there was an in-person meeting coordinated with the Knicks to resolve the issue, likely including Leon Rose and vice president William Wesley. The two sides have been willing to make that happen, which could be soon.
With or without Murray, the Knicks are still a competitive team in the east, currently with a record of 17-12 and sitting at the sixth seed.
