The deadline to extend Immanuel Quickley’s contract has come and gone, and nothing was agreed upon. Both sides had been discussing an extension in the days leading up to it.
The former Kentucky guard was selected with the 25th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.
Quickley had a breakout season last year, averaging 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists. He also led the team with the highest plus-minus at +319.
The 24-year-old was a vital piece on last years’ Knicks playoff team and finished second in Sixth Man of the Year voting behind Malcolm Brogdon.
As ESPN’s Bobby Marks said, if the Knicks extended Quickley that would have had a poison pill in his contract. That would have put restrictions on what the Knicks could have got in return for him if a trade went through.
Quickley is now going into the fourth season of his $4.1 million rookie deal, which is easier to include in a trade.
He will be a restricted free agent next summer, meaning the Knicks can match any offer sheet if he signs with another team.
Quickley will likely draw significant interest around the league if he has another big season.
