Ware played two seasons of college basketball at two different schools, improving from year one to year two. He is now in the 2024 NBA Draft.
As a five-star prospect out of Arkansas, Ware signed with Oregon out of high school. In one season with the Ducks, Ware averaged 6.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. The Ducks did not make the NCAA Tournament. Following the season, Ware transferred to Indiana. While the Hoosiers failed to make the NCAA Tournament, Ware showed vast improvement, averaging 15.9 points, 9.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game.
Following his leap in production at Indiana, Ware declared for the 2024 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.
Kel’el Ware Strengths
Ware is one of the best rim protectors in the class. He averaged 1.9 blocks per game at Indiana and 1.1 at Oregon. Ware displays good timing and leaping ability. His length can alter shots even when he doesn’t block them. He specifically picks up a lot of blocks when playing help defense.
His athleticism and body control for his size is very intriguing. Ware can get up the floor in transition. He is a threat to finish with dunks or be on the receiving ends of alley-oops. This also helps him with his rim protection. He should be able to match up with other big men in the NBA with his rim protection.
While there are some flaws with his rebounding, he was a able to produce at Indiana. Ware can see where the ball is coming off the rim and is then able to go high point the ball. At times, he can box out and win rebounding battles, but that needs to become more consistent.
Kel’el Ware Weaknesses
Ware showed he can stretch the floor a bit, shooting 42.5 percent from deep, but he needs to shoot with more volume. He made just 0.6 3-point shots per game and to truly stretch the floor, he may need to get more attempts and makes up per game.
Although his shooting from the mid-range and 3-point range did show some potential, his free throw shooting hasn’t matched that. Ware shot just 63.4 percent from the free throw line last season. This could limit his effectiveness, as he is a solid interior scorer with the capability of drawing a lot of fouls.
Handling physicality and pressure is something that Ware will need to work on continually. He can be outworked down low, being pushed off his spot when rebounding, scoring or defending. With more focus he can put in work and be successful. He also doesn’t handle double teams well and can be turnover prone.
Projected Draft Range: First Round Pick
