The 2024 NBA Draft will be an important event for teams to build for their future. Here is the Johnny Furphy 2024 NBA Draft Profile.
Johnny Furphy Background
Position: Forward
Size:Â 6-foot-7.5, 188.8 pounds
Class: Freshman
College: Kansas
2023-2024 stats: 9.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.9 steals, 0.3 blocks, 46.6% FG, 35.2% 3FG, 76.5% FT
Furphy didn’t get a good opportunity until the season was already underway, but he played well in his one year of college basketball. Now he is in the 2024 NBA Draft.
As a four-star recruit from Australia, Furphy signed with Kansas. He did not start for the Jayhawks at the beginning of the season and took a while to break into the lineup. After doing so, he had a solid freshman season that saw him average 9.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. He helped Kansas win one NCAA Tournament game, but the Jayhawks were bounced in second round.
Following the NCAA Tournament appearance, Furphy declared for the 2024 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a late first-round or early second-round pick.
Johnny Furphy Strengths
Furphy has some amazing potential as a shooter, particularly off the catch. He only shot 35.2 percent from 3-point range at Kansas, but he shot well off the catch and after he got more regular playing time. Continuing to develop his outside shot will make him a very good perimeter shooter.
His ability to finish at the basket is also impressive. He does throw down dunks in transition, but he also can finish with either hand near the basket. Furphy has shown the ability to get creative when finishing and can handle minimal contact.
Although he was a young player for Kansas, Furphy showed a good knowledge of the game. He had a positive assist to turnover ratio and saw the floor well. Furphy took open shots. He also did the little things to help Kansas win, like playing multiple positions and battling for rebounds.
Johnny Furphy Weaknesses
Furphy is a decent athlete, but he can struggle to guard quicker players on the perimeter. He simply doesn’t have the footspeed to keep up with them. That makes it tough for him to find a matchup, as he isn’t adept at guarding in the post either.
Adding weight to his frame is a must. Furphy is only 188 pounds, which is very light at 6-foot-7. He can use this strength to guard bigger players on the interior. Furphy can also use it to help him get to his spots on offense and to finish through contact better.
While Furphy is good at running around screens to get open and shooting off the catch, he struggles to create his own shot. He doesn’t have the ball-handling to separate. That struggle to create also extends to setting up his teammates, as he had the ball in his hands a limited amount of time at Kansas.
Projected Draft Range: Late First Round Pick-Early Second Round Pick
