Hood-Schifino spent one season at Indiana where he made a huge impact. Now he is in the 2023 NBA Draft.
As a four-star recruit out of Florida, Hood-Schifino decided to leave the state to play at Indiana. In his lone season with the Hoosiers, Hood-Schifino averaged 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. His play aided Indiana in going 23-12 and making the second round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
Following the NCAA Tournament appearance, Hood-Schifino declared for the 2023 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.
Jalen Hood-Schifino Strengths
Hood-Schifino has a good build for a player that handles the ball often. He stands 6-foot-4 and has a decently-well-filled-out frame at 217 pounds. Hood-Schifino will be a mismatch for other guards who try to guard him, as he is bigger than a lot of them.
He has the ability to run the pick and roll well. Hood-Schifino shows the ability to read the floor well and can find the roller for easy baskets. He can also find players for open 3-point shots if others crash down on the roller. On top of that, Hood-Schifino knows when to keep the ball for himself, whether that is pulling up from deep or getting to the basket. In today’s NBA where pick and rolls are prevalent, Hood-Schifino can operate them well.
Hood-Schifino has the ability to create shots for himself as well. He has a really good pull up jumper both from deep and from the mid-range. Hood-Schifino can create separation and also has the ability to get to the basket. He doesn’t finish around the rim at the highest rate, but he can hit floaters and finish layups and dunks decently well.
Jalen Hood-Schifino Weaknesses
Hood-Schifino can continue to improve his shooting. He shot 33 percent from deep at Indiana, which is a solid start, but can be improved. Hood-Schifino excelled at shooting from the top of the key and the wings, but will need to do a better job shooting from the corners. A lot of his shooting was done off the dribble and he can continue working on shooting off the catch.
He can be a more impactful defender at the next level. Hood-Schifino can stay more engaged when guarding on and off the ball. He can jump passing lanes and show better awareness of how to help his teammates when he is off the ball.
While he does see the floor well, he could protect the basketball better. That goes for his passing and ball handling. He averaged 2.8 turnovers per game at Indiana and needs to show tighter handles and better decision-making with his passes.
Projected Draft Range: First-Round Pick
