Holmes continually improved each season he played at Dayton and developed into a star. He is now in the 2024 NBA Draft.
As a four-star recruit from Florida, Holmes signed with Dayton out of high school. In his freshman season, Holmes averaged 12.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. The Flyers did not make the NCAA Tournament that season. They also didn’t make it the next season, despite Holmes averaging 18.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Holmes led the Flyers with 20.4 points and 8.5 rebounds in 2023-2024. His play helped Dayton make the NCAA Tournament and make the second round.
Following the NCAA Tournament appearance, Holmes declared for the 2024 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.
DaRon Holmes Strengths
Holmes has good athleticism and body control, especially given his size. He can run the floor well and even push the ball himself in transition. Holmes can finish in transition or in halfcourt situations with a dunk. He is a solid leaper and has good foot quickness as well. His body control helps him drive to the basket and remain under control.
His shooting vastly improved during his college career. Holmes shot 38.6 percent from 3-point range last season after an otherwise nonstellar career shooting. It seems like his shooting improvements can be sustained, as he took 2.5 3-pointers per game. This will help him spread the floor at the next level.
He has impressive shot blocking ability, specifically when playing help defense. His quick feet help him cover a lot of distance. Then his length and athleticism takes over. He shows good effort to get to the basketball and times his jump well. Even though he’s shorter than 6-foot-9, he can protect the rim in the NBA.
DaRon Holmes Weaknesses
While his shooting improved last season, he still has to prove that it is going to continue to improve at the NBA level. It looks like he will be fine, but will need to continue working on things. He still shot just 67.1 percent from the free throw line, which will also has to get better.
Holmes played at Dayton where he didn’t get to play consistent top levels of competition. He was the best player on the floor for a lot of games by a wide margin, which is a credit to him, but he didn’t get to sharpen his skills as often as other players. It may take an adjustment period for Holmes to contribute at the next level due to the relative lack of competition.
He needs to limit his turnovers, especially if he is going to be trusted with the ball in his hands. He averaged 2.2 turnovers per game. Sometimes his handles can get a little loose and he can get stripped of his dribble. A lot of times though, he tries to pass and gets picked off, so he also needs to see the floor better.
