No Wemby, no problem for San Antonio.
NBA fans were ready to see first overall pick, Victor Wembanyama, make his Summer League debut at the California Classic. Instead, they were treated to a game where Wemby did not play. It did not matter for the Spurs though, as they were able to dominate the Charlotte Hornets 98-77.
The Spurs started hot, leading 32-11 after the first quarter. They never slowed down after that, closing out the Hornets and picking up their first Summer League victory.
They were able to stop Brandon Miller in the first half and held him to only 18 points in his Summer League debut. The Spurs also forced Miller to commit seven fouls and turn the ball over six times.
Julian Champagnie scored 30 points and racked up 8 rebounds in the win. He also knocked down five threes. Dominick Barlow also played well, going 10-13 from the field and scoring 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Barlow also was great defensively, adding two blocks.
44th overall pick, Sidy Cissoko, scored 3 points and had 4 rebounds. Although it may not show up in the box score, Cissoko was great defensively in this one as the main defender on 2nd overall pick Brandon Miller. Blake Wesley also added 8 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists.
The Spurs play the Lakers in the California Classic Wednesday July 5. Victor Wembanyama is expected to make his Summer League debut Friday July 7 against the Hornets.
