Black played one season at Arkansas, leading the team at the point guard position. Now he is in the 2023 NBA Draft.
As a five-star prospect out of Texas, Black chose to leave the state to play for Arkansas. In his one season with the Razorbacks, Black averaged 12.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. His play helped Arkansas make the Sweet 16 during the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
Following his one season at Arkansas, Black declared for the 2023 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a top 10 pick.
Anthony Black Strengths
Black has great height for a point guard in the NBA at 6-foot-6. He can fill out his frame a little bit more at 210 pounds, but has a good starting point for the NBA. With his height comes a good 6-foot-8 wingspan that helps him get shots over smaller defenders and jump passing lanes as a defender.
He is a playmaking point guard and that skill will be even more useful in the NBA with a more spaced-out floor. Black can push the ball in transition and make plays for himself or his teammates. He confidently runs the pick and roll well, making the right decision on passing or taking the ball for himself. In the halfcourt offense, he is capable of setting up his teammates for open shots.
His defense is very intriguing. Black uses his good wingspan and quick feet to stay in front of opponents. He can contest shots because of his length. Black also has good awareness on the defensive side of the ball to jump passing lanes when he isn’t guarding the ball.
Anthony Black Weaknesses
Black will need to continue to work on his shooting. He shot just 30 percent from deep in college, which isn’t terrible, but definitely will need to be worked on to call it a strength. Black also needs to shoot better from the free throw line, as he hit just 70 percent of his free throws.
As mentioned, Black needs to continue adding strength to his frame. Because he is a bigger point guard, opposing teams may put wing defenders who are a lot stronger on him. He’ll need to add that strength to defend them, but also to play through contact and to finish at the rim.
He can make plays for others, but Black has trouble getting his own shot. Black doesn’t have the consistent ability to make space for a jumper or get to the basket in the half-court offense. With more work, he should be able to create for himself more, but it will take some time to develop those skills.
Projected Draft Range: Top 10 Pick
