Toward the end of the 2022 season, the Yankees started to look to add some of their bright, young talent to their roster as they made a playoff push. With some of their veteran starters being more injury prone than most, it was important for them to consider looking at their farm system closely.
As the off-season is in full swing, teams are making changes all over the place while the Yankees have been relatively quiet. The major move that they have their eyes on currently is Aaron Judge, who is currently entertaining offers from other organizations as he is eying a major contract.
What Happens if Judge Leaves?
The question that remains is simply, what will the Yankees do if they lose Judge to another organization? With their immense bank account and spending limit, it is possible that they could move to sign another name that is on the free agent list, however, it could be a better option to just simply look at the talent they already have.
Jasson Dominguez is an upstart outfielder whom the Yankees have been very conservative with in the big leagues. He boasts incredible potential as he is a five-tool guy, that also switch hits at the plate. Loaded with power and speed, there are hopes that he will lead the offense in years to come as a starting outfielder.
The great thing about Dominguez is the fact that he is still only 19 years old, which is exactly why the Yankees haven’t been too pressured to move him up. He’s performed very well at every level he has been placed at, and it is predicted that his success will continue for years to come at the Major League level.
Pitching Additions
Not only do they have hopes of bringing a top-prospect outfielder, but also a starting pitcher in the name of Jhony Brito. A young pitching prospect that boasts a high-90s fastball and a plus breaking ball, he posted a 3.31 ERA in his time in AAA last year.
Toward the end of the season in 2022, the Yankees found it difficult to get a consistent start from the back-end of their rotation. With his continued experience at the AAA level, many of the Yankee front office have predicted that he will make his Major League debut in the 2023 season.
As the struggles Domingo German has experienced continue, it’s quite clear that the Yankees need another starting pitcher that they can rely on.
Should the Yankees Make a Major Move?
The question still remains for some; should the Yankees make another move besides their pursuit for Judge? Many would move to the point that they have one of the biggest spending limits of any team and that going out and getting another big-name free agent like Trea Turner wouldn’t hurt, but other have faith in their farm system.
At the end of the day, it remains that while injuries may plague them from time to time, they still possess one of the deepest rosters in baseball. They can afford to keep prospects in the minors for extended periods of time to allow them to perfect their craft before donning a Yankee uniform, which is to their benefit. However, it is only a matter of time for both of these prospects and the Yankees have high hopes that they will blossom into stars.
