In the latest round of The Rivalry, the Red Sox win the series over the Yankees, two to one. This brings the Red Sox back to .500, as they are now 33-33. Now, what does this tell the fans for the season going forward?
1. Rafael Devers still has Gerrit Cole and the Yankee’s number
Devers has 21 home runs against the Yankees since 2017, more than any other MLB team he has faced. Hopefully, this puts him back on track as the Sox’s best hitter.
2. Without their ace Chris Sale, the Sox still have good pitching
With the loss of Chris Sale for two months, it was looking like the Red Sox were going to have a hard time on the starting pitching side of games. However, in this series, the other members of the starting rotation picked up the slack.
In the first game, Garrett Whitlock dominated, pitching seven inning and getting six strikeouts, and only gave up two runs, one being a homer, and the other off a wild pitch.
In the second game, while it was still a loss, Tanner Houck also pitched a good game. Houck went for six innings, striking out six and gave up two runs, both solo home runs.
Finally, in third game, Brayan Bello pitched seven innings, giving up two runs in the second, and then holding the Yankees scoreless for the next five.
3. The Red Sox have mastered the Art of the Comeback
The Sox’s win on Sunday was their 19th comeback win of this season, one of the top teams in the league. They also have won all three games this season that have gone to extra innings.
With this knowledge, fans of the Sox should remain calm when the opposing team scores first, as the Sox know how to rally back.
While the Red Sox win the series over the Yankees and the latest round of The Rivalry, the next round of the regular season is right around the corner. You can catch the next chapter of the Rivalry on June 16 to June 18, where the Yankees will travel to Fenway to face off against the Sox.
