Every week MLB teams will be ranked for the rest of the season. Here are the 2023 MLB power rankings for the week of June 5.
1. Tampa Bay Rays
Record: 42-19
Previous Ranking: 1
The Rays remain a few steps above everybody else. They face off with the number 2 ranked Texas Rangers this week, in a 3-game series that will likely decide the best team in baseball at this moment.
2. Texas Rangers
Record: 38-20
Previous Ranking: 2
The Rangers have the hottest offense in baseball. They’ve already scored over 360 runs in just 58 games, led by Marcus Semien, Josh Jung, and Nathaniel Lowe.
3. Baltimore Orioles
Record: 37-22
Previous Ranking: 3
The Orioles lineup has been paced by 5 players with a WAR over 1.0. They also feature a respectable pitching staff and a bullpen featuring 2 of the best bullpen arms in the MLB, Felix Bautista and Yennier Cano.
4. Los Angeles Dodgers
Record:
Previous Ranking: 4
Top Dodgers prospect, Bobby Miller has been electric. Miller’s fastball often sits in the triple digits, averaging over 99 MPH. He looks to be as good as advertised.
5. New York Yankees
Record:
Previous Ranking: 7
Aaron Judge has caught fire. Believe it or not, he is off to an even better start in 2023 than he got off to in 2022, when he finished with a historic MVP season.
6. Houston Astros
Record: 35-24
Previous Ranking: 5
The Astros have been one of the hottest teams in baseball, going 7-3 over their last 10 games including taking 3/4 from the Angels. A healthy Jose Altuve has helped bolster the offense.
7. Arizona Diamondbacks
Record:
Previous Ranking: 8
The Diamondbacks offense has been incredible this year. They have 6 offensive players above a 1.0 WAR and two starting pitchers with a 1.7 WAR. And they hold the 12th pick in July’s draft. The future is here in Arizona.
8. Atlanta Braves
Record:
Previous Ranking: 6
The Braves hold a decent lead on the AL East. With the quality of their pitching, including Mike Soroka returning from an extended layoff, they could get very hot, very fast.
9. Toronto Blue Jays
Record: 33-27
Previous Ranking: 16
The Blue Jays had a good week including a series sweep of the Mets and a series win over the Brewers. They ride a 4-game win streak as they host the Houston Astros to start this week.
10. Milwaukee Brewers
Record: 32-27
Previous Ranking: 12
MLB Pipeline’s number 2 prospect, Jackson Chourio has shown flashes of potential in Double-A this season. His combination of power and speed is certainly a sight to behold for baseball fans.
11. Minnesota Twins
Record: 31-29
Previous Ranking: 10
The Twins will likely end up with a high school prospect with the 5th overall pick in this year’s draft. They have a plethora of MLB ready prospects that are closing in on their MLB debut, meaning they can take bigger risks with their draft picks.
12. Pittsburgh Pirates
Record: 31-27
Previous Ranking: 17
The Pirates own the first overall pick in the 2023 draft. More than likely, they will go with the LSU outfielder, Dylan Crews. Crews has an incredible hit tool, ranked as a 70 on the 20-80 scale by MLB Pipeline.
13. Miami Marlins
Record: 32-28
Previous Ranking: 20
Eury Perez has shown why he is a top 10 prospect and why he is MLB ready at just the age of 20. He has a WHIP of 1.17 and an ERA of 2.25 in 5 starts. Eury is here to stay and will be dominant for a long time.
14. Boston Red Sox
Record: 30-29
Previous Ranking: 11
The Red Sox are the last place team in the AL East, but are still above .500. If they were in the AL Central, they would trail the division lead by just half a game. In the AL East, they are 11 games back. Terrible luck for Boston fans.
15. San Francisco Giants
Record: 29-30
Previous Ranking: 13
Logan Webb, Alex Cobb and Anthony DeSclafani have created a 3 headed starting pitching monster in the Bay Area. They each have an ERA below 3.50 and combine for a 5.7 WAR.
16. Los Angeles Angels
Record: 31-30
Previous Ranking: 9
The Angels have seen a bit more production from players not named Trout or Ohtani as of late. Gio Urshela leads the team in batting average and Brandon Drury leads the team in doubles.
17. Seattle Mariners
Record: 29-30
Previous Ranking: 14
The Mariners hold 3 picks in the first 30 picks of this year’s MLB draft, including back-to-back picks at 29 and 30. After unloading their farm system to make a few “win now” trades last season, the Mariners will bolster their farm system in July.
18. New York Mets
Record: 30-30
Previous Ranking: 15
The Mets see a slight drop in these rankings due to being swept by the Toronto Blue Jays. They face a tough 9 game stretch with series against the Braves, Pirates, and Yankees over the next week and a half.
19. Cleveland Guardians
Record: 27-32
Previous Ranking: 24
The Guardians are 5 games under .500, but still only 3.5 games out of first in the AL Central. They must stay afloat and hang around the Twins until a few of their 5 top 100 prospects are ready to be in the MLB. Top 100 prospects Tanner Bibee and Brayan Rocchio are already there.
20. Philadelphia Phillies
Record: 27-32
Previous Ranking: 18
The Phillies are being extra careful with their number one prospect, RHP Andrew Painter. The 6’7 righty sprained his UCL in the preseason and has yet to make his 2023 debut. Andrew Painter is a name to know among MLB’s top prospects.
21. San Diego Padres
Record:
Previous Ranking: 19
The Padres recently saw the debut of their number three prospect, Ethan Salas. At just 17 years old, Salas is one of the youngest prospects in MLB history and has already flashed maturity and potential for his age.
22. Detroit Tigers
Record: 26-31
Previous Ranking: 22
The Tigers should have their choice of 3 of the top 4 outfielders in this years draft with the 3rd pick. It is likely that Florida outfielder Wyatt Langford is available, as well as high school products Max Clark and Walker Jenkins.
23. Cincinnati Reds
Record: 26-33
Previous Ranking: 25
The future generation is beginning in Cincinnati. Prospects Andrew Abbott and TJ Hopkins received the call up this week. When will Elly De La Cruz and Christian Encarnacion-Strand get their call up?
24. Chicago Cubs
Record:
Previous Ranking: 26
MLB Pipelines 13th ranked prospect, Pete Crow-Armstrong, has caught fire as of late. He aims to get a call to the Cubs Triple-A affiliate in the near future.
25. Colorado Rockies
Record: 26-35
Previous Ranking: 28
The Rockies will look to bolster their farm system in July, where they hold a top 10 pick. With very few MLB ready prospects in their system, it is likely they pick a college player that is closer to MLB ready.
26. Washington Nationals
Record: 25-34
Previous Ranking: 23
In this year’s MLB draft, the Nationals should add another top 30 MLB prospects with the second overall pick. This pick will likely be used on LSU’s Paul Skenes, who features an 80-grade fastball that creeps into triple digits.
27. Chicago White Sox
Record: 26-35
Previous Ranking: 27
The White Sox are awaiting their number two prospect, Oscar Colas, to turn his 2023 season around. The 24-year-old prospect has struggled in Triple-A this year, but a turnaround could result in a call up for the lefty.
28. St Louis Cardinals
Record: 25-35
Previous Ranking: 21
The Cardinals have the third worst record in the MLB, but still have a positive run differential. Their offense (282 runs scored) stands out as the most among the bottom 10 teams in terms of record.
29. Kansas City Royals
Record: 18-41
Previous Ranking: 29
Salvador Perez is their lone hitter above a .260 batting average as well as their only hitter above a 1.0 WAR. With just 1 top 100 prospect, the Royals don’t have much to look forward to as of now.
30. Oakland Athletics
Record: 12-49
Previous Ranking: 30
The Athletics matched their season high in consecutive wins this week: 2! They won two games in a row and took the series from the Atlanta Braves this week.
