The Milwaukee Brewers won Game 1 of the NLDS over the Colorado Rockies 3-2 thanks to a walk-off single by Mike Moustakas in the bottom of the 10th.
Milwaukee Brewers
Brewers manager Craig Counsell decided to save starter Wade Miley and “bullpenned” the game. Reliever Brandon Woodruff got the start for Milwaukee and pitched three scoreless innings. He only allowed one base runner, a walk to D.J. LeMahieu who got thrown out trying to steal second. Reliever Corbin Burns followed Woodruff with two scoreless innings of his own and struck out three. Burns allowed the only hit to the Rockies, a triple to Carlos Gonzalez. Corey Knebel kept the joint shutout going as he pitched 1.2 scoreless innings. Knebel walked one and ended his outing by striking out Nolan Arenado.
Josh Hader came in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and got the next four batters he faced. Jeremy Jeffress pitched the bottom of ninth and unraveled. He had a 1.29 era in the regular season and only four blown saves but blew the biggest game of his career. Jeffress gave up two runs on three hits with one strikeout. Joakim Soria pitched a scoreless tenth and got the win. The Brew Crew will need a good performance from their starter in Game 2, to give the bullpen a rest.
Colorado Rockies
Antonio Senzatela got the start and went five innings and gave up two runs on three hits. Senzatela threw one bad pitch that was crushed for a two-run home run by Brewers MVP candidate Christian Yelich. Yelich rounded the bases to chants of “MVP” by the home crowd. The Rockies bullpen were able to keep the deficit to two. D.J. Johnson, Chris Rusin, Harrison Musgrave and Scott Oberg combined for three scoreless innings and five strikeouts. The four relievers were able to pitch out of tight jams and gave the offense a chance to tie it.
The offense were held to one hit through the first eight innings, finally broke through in the bottom of the ninth. Gerardo Parra led off with a pinch hit single and Matt Holiday followed him with a pinch hit single of his own. Charlie Blackmon got his first single of the game to score Parra. Nolan Arenado hit a sac fly to tie the game.
Tyler Anderson will be on the mound for game two. He will be facing the Brewers top pitcher, Jhoulys Chacin.
