The New York Mets have officially added Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz in a trade with the Seattle Mariners. New York is also receiving $20 million in the deal to offset Cano’s remaining salary.
Robinson Cano
Cano’s 2018 season was cut short when he was hit with an 80 game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s banned substance policy. However, when he was on the field he was very productive. In his 310 at bats he hit .303 with 10 home runs, 50 RBI and had an OPS of .845.
During his five year tenure with the Mariners, Cano played in 704 games. His average over that time was .296 and he hit 107 home runs, had 411 RBI and a .826 OPS. Back in 2016 he hit a career-high 39 homers and finished eighth in the AL MVP vote.
Edwin Diaz
Edwin Diaz is a blossoming young closer. At 24 years of age, under team control through 2022 and coming off a franchise-record 57-save season, he is the big prize for the Mets.
In 2018, his third big league season, Diaz had 124 strikeouts in 73.1 innings with an ERA of 1.96 and a FIP of 1.61. When Diaz entered a game with a lead the Mariners were 66-0. He also made his first All-Star appearance and finished eighth in the Cy Young vote and eighteenth in the MVP vote.
Seattle’s Return
Only time will tell if the Mariners really lost in this trade or not, but for the time being, they definitely appear to have gotten the worse end of the deal. They did get a decent return, but it’s hardly comparable to Cano, Diaz and $20 million.
Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak and Gerson Bautista are the current major leaguers that Seattle will be getting. They will also receive prospects Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn though.
This trade along with the looming Segura deal are signs that the Mariners are looking ahead. They realize their core has aged and their window is probably closed, especially given the current competition in the AL, so they are becoming more focused on the future.
