The Houston Astros have been looking to fix their relief pitching, one of their only weaknesses, at the MLB trade deadline. They have added Cleveland’s Phil Maton to their bullpen for center fielder Myles Straw, who has been on the Astros MLB roster since 2018.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the news via Twitter on Friday afternoon.
Cleveland has been telling teams it’s willing to part with relief pitching, and right-hander Phil Maton is the one going, to Houston, for center fielder Myles Straw. Houston’s bullpen, which was shaky coming into the deadline, suddenly looks better with Graveman, Garcia, Maton.

Maton is posting a 4.57 ERA in 2021. In 41.1 innings pitched, he has struck out 61 batters and allowed four home runs. Meanwhile, Straw has 34 RBI and a .262 batting average in 325 at-bats this season. This is by far the most at-bats he has seen in a season.
Along with Maton, the Astros have added Kendall Graveman and Yimi Garcia to their bullpen. Now, with a revamped bullpen, Houston can now look toward a potential deep playoff run.
