Miracles Happen
The 2016 season was a year Cubs fans will never forget as their beloved team ended the 108-year drought. The entire World Series was a sweat fest as the Cubs had to battle back from being down against Cleveland. This was a miracle waiting to happen because many people believed the Cubs were cursed. The billy goat curse followed the Cubs for ages and this has led to the Cubs being known as the loveable losers. It was a miracle because for something good to happen to the Cubs was out of the ordinary. However, it was something waiting to happen with an MVP, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award winners on the team. After 2016 though, it would begin to look like the Cubs were going backward in time.
Billy Goat Comeback
After the Cubs came up clutch in 2016, it would seem as if they couldn’t be as clutch anymore. The 2017 season looked promising as they advanced to the NLCS to face the Dodgers. However, they were nearly swept in a 4-1 series loss. The 2018 season was frustrating for Cubs fans as they went through some ups and downs during the season. They would go on and lose in the wildcard round of the playoffs to the Rockies. Last year, the Cubs didn’t even make the playoffs and now it’s as if they’re working backward with the loss of Joe Maddon. Cubs fans are now skeptical of general manager Theo Epstein and are scared of losing their key players such as Javy Baez, Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant.
Last Chance Cubs
Baez, Rizzo and Bryant will become free agents after 2021 and it’s expected for them to go where the money is considering they haven’t gotten paid for their true potential yet. These three players deserve to be paid over $100 million but the Cubs can’t pay all three of them. Along with those three are Kyle Schwarber, Jason Heyward and Wilson Contreas who play a big role in the Cubs’ success. They also are expected to test free agency soon and the front office is well aware of the possibility of them leaving.
They decided to focus on their bullpen for this season, which is their weakness. They drafted a few relievers along with making a trade for Cody Allen. The Cubs are off to a good start this season and Cubs fans look forward to them making a deep run in the playoffs and going for another ring.
