The deal will be for three years and is rumored to be worth over $20 million.
Akiyama hit .303 with 62 RBIs in 143 games in the Japanese League last season.
Cincinnati has been active this offseason trying to improve their team. They have already signed infielder Mike Moustakas and starting pitcher Wade Miley.
The signing of Akiyama makes the outfield crowded. They have Nick Senzel, Jesse Winker, Aristides Aquino, Philip Ervin and Josh VanMeter from last season still signed. The Reds also claimed Mark Payton off of waivers. Also currently on their roster are Scott Schebler, Travis Jankowski, Nick Martini and Jose Siri.
