Brewers right-handed pitcher, Corbin Burnes, has remained at the top of this CY Young watch list for the entirety of its existence. Burnes has been a consistent anchor at the top of the Brewers rotation for the better part of a year. He has ranked among the league’s best in ERA, strikeouts, and WHIP for the entire season. So far, he has recorded 8 starts where he registered at least 10 strikeouts in the game. This is tied with Shohei Ohtani for the most in the league. For the month of July, he was pretty spectacular. In his 31.33 innings, he recorded 41 strikeouts and posted a 2.01 ERA. This lowered his season ERA down to a 2.31.

ERA: 1.99
Innings Pitched: 149.33
WHIP: 0.944
Strikeouts: 138
WAR: 5.4
Sandy Alcantara has been one of the biggest breakout stars of the 2022 season. After putting together a few respectable seasons in his first 5 years, he has burst onto the scene this year. He ranks in the top 10 in the MLB in multiple categories, including ERA, strikeouts, and WHIP. He put together a good July where he recorded 41 strikeouts, including 3 games with 10+ strikeouts, while only walking 9. The Marlins ace routinely makes starts that are 7+ innings pitched, with a few complete games and a few 8 inning starts. This has led to him leading the league in innings pitched by a wide margin. He has been special.
Max Fried, SP, Atlanta Braves

W-L Record: 10-3
ERA: 2.58
Innings Pitched: 132.33
WHIP: 1.073

Max Fried is the newest player to make an appearance in the NL CY Young watch. He has done this by posting a sub-2.5 ERA in the month of June and the month of July. In that span, Fried has totaled 5 wins and just 1 loss. He has done this behind the emergence of his tremendous slider and curveball. His slider is allowing a batting average against of .194 while his curveball is allowing a batting average against of .193. These two pitches have accounted for 60 of his 122 strikeouts. A truly dominant pair of breaking balls.
Prediction: Sandy Alcantara, SP, Miami Marlins
The NL CY Young, as of now, is Sandy Alcantara, for a multitude of reasons. For one, he has been the most consistent and reliable arm in the NL for the entire season. This looks to continue as the year winds down. For two, he has a significant lead in the NL in WAR and ERA, which are two categories that the voters take into huge consideration when placing their votes. He has featured a dominant arsenal of pitches, with tremendous statistics to back it up. Hes allowing a sub-.200 batting average on his slider, changeup, and four-seam fastball. Those 3 pitches make up 75% of his total pitches. Alcantara has been special and his special season will continue.
