On Tues August 24, Wizards of the Coast held an hour long stream detailing their plans for the 2022 year. The showcase stream featured the timeline of four brand new sets for standard. The first set players will get their hands on is a re-visit to one of the most memorable sets in Magic’s history. In the first quarter of 2022, players are heading back to Kamigawa.
Welcome all, to Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty.
A Futuristic Fusion
Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty brings players back to the plane filled with spirits, rats, and samurai – but 2000 years in the future. Neon Dynasty looks to meld the old themes of Kamigawa with new futuristic, cyber-punk type flair. The few art pieces displayed on the stream feature plenty of neon in a vibrant city filled with skyscrapers, monorails and a large tree in the center of it all. Players are surely going to explore this revitalized landscape as they crack open packs early next year.

The developers on stream mentioned how they wanted to go back to Kamigawa for some time now. They knew they wanted to revisit the plane after player feedback. Audiences loved the theme and the aesthetic of classic Kamigawa. The largets issue players found was the game play itself. Ninjutsu was fun, however things like Channel, Bushido and Splice wound up complicating the game a bit more than players expected. The Magic development team noted that they would be essentially re-doing plenty of the old mechanics, but keeping the old feel of Kamigawa. It’s been quite some time since the end of the Kamigawa block, and players are excited to see what new life can be brought into this old plane.

This looks interesting, but isn’t this just the Shadowrun IP? Ah… Shadowrun. I loved that card game. In fact I got in a game just a few weeks ago. This pandemic has me playing all my old CCGs and video games.
