Team Liquid recently announced an extension to their partnership with SAP, the enterprise application software company. This partnership started in 2018, with SAP supporting Team Liquid through innovative technologies to boost gameplay for DOTA 2 and League of Legends. SAP provides in-game data analytics and assists with strategic preparation.
SAP HANA, a database management system with advanced analytics featuring machine learning, is Team Liquid’s go-to for efficiently analyzing opponents. By using historical match data, SAP helps Team Liquid develop pre-match plans. As Official Innovation Partner, SAP will also help Team Liquid in player recruitment and talent development moving forward.
According to Team Liquid, the LCS team uses SAP’s tools daily to prepare and collect data relevant to match preparation. SAP works directly with the analyst team to develop and align them with viable data. For example, they may reference a “Team Overview Page” to gain understanding of what the team has been practicing, how to prepare for the day and what they need to focus on. The SAP tool is more directly used by Liquid’s coaches, analysts and staff. However, players can also access it.
SAP’s Esports Experience
SAP has an entire website dedicated to esports, explaining how exactly advanced analytics plays interacts with the space. Live broadcast data integration, highlights graphics, draft analysis, and market analysis are some of the areas SAP interacts with the industry. According to the site, “SAP is delivering a cloud-based analytics application which allows Team Liquid to efficiently analyze opponents’ strategies based on historical in-game data.” They also point out parallels in analyzing esports and business.
