The latest Pokemon The Indigo Disk DLC trailer just dropped and there was a ton of information that was revealed. Between all of the legendaries and starters being added along with showing off the Paldean Gym Leaders in a more casual setting, this trailer was very informative. But there was one completely unexpected addition to the series seen in this trailer. The Indigo Disk Allows for Players to Run Around as their Pokemon in the open world.

The Indigo Disk Allows Players to Run Around as Pokemon
The fact that The Indigo Disk Allows Players to Run Around as Pokemon in the Open World is a massive addition to the game. This has been done before to a certain degree with the many different ride Pokemon in both Legends Arceus and the Scarlet and Violet games. But never just as the Pokemon.
It is shown in the trailer that one of the Blueberry Academy Professors or at least Scientists is testing something and asks if you want to join. After that, it shows the player concentrating and then Pikachu going around and running. See the controls below.
The Pokemon Company has revealed more about this. Check out what they have on the official Pokemon Site below.
“The Synchro Machine
Once players progress far enough in their adventure in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero Part 2: The Indigo Disk, they’ll be able to use a device called the Synchro Machine to see the world through the eyes of their Pokémon. While synchronized with one of their Pokémon, they can move around and battle wild Pokémon—a fresh new way to play the game. It appears that this device is still a prototype. Players can use it once they’ve helped a scientist in the Terarium with her research.”
What does Free Roaming as a Pokemon Mean to the Series?
There is no doubt that this is the Pokemon Company trying new things. Obviously, in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, you play as the Pokemon and are running around as them. But to have this added to a mainline Pokemon game was previously unthinkable.
It will be interesting to see if they end up keeping it for the next game. While Pokemon has recently been criticized for the state Scarlet and Violet were in on release, the latest games for Pokemon have truly been pushing beyond the norm for the series.
This is just another example of that and one that could have huge implications for the future. Could you have to use certain Pokemon to complete certain tasks in the future? If this is you taking over the Pokemon, could there be a group trying to stop that in the next series?
There are so many questions and very few answers until The Indigo Disk releases on the Nintendo Switch on December 14, 2023.
