Super Smash Bros. Ultimate dropped on December 7, and it’s time to start a conversation. Ultimate offers a very different feel compared to its counterparts. Melee has its ridiculous techniques, Brawl has its casual vibe. and Smash 4 plays on its own terms. Ultimate has proved to the community that it improves on what was previously built.
The Smash Bros. competitive scene is going to have a bright future all thanks to how the developers had the community in mind. From adding specific rulesets to having a hazard switch, the competitive vibe is at ease.
A lot of competitive players from both Melee and Smash 4 have picked up the game. All of them are looking to establish themselves as the first top players of the community.
First reactions may not be completely accurate, but they are necessary. In Smash Ultimate, there are currently 69 different fighters, not including Echo Fighters. This means 69 different matchups, and 69 different characters to explore.
Now let’s dive into the roster, and talk about the potential of the different characters.
Top Tiers
Inkling
This character has a lot going for them. Inkling has an excellent recovery – something that is extremely valuable in this game due to how easy is to edge guard someone. Additionally, their speed and excellent air game help them stand out. Playing as Inkling flows very well due to all of the previously mentioned aspects of his character. Top players have mentioned how if anyone is making a transition from melee to Ultimate, this is the character to pick up. Watch out for Inkling in the scene. Because he will shine.
Chrom
This is not the traditional top tier. His recovery is lacking, but he more than makes up for it. His overall game is very solid, possessing a great up aerial that catches most players around him. It seems like Chrom takes the best aspects of each of the Fire Emblem characters. All of this adding up to establish him as a top tier in the metagame
Pikachu
Pikachu shines in this game for multiple reasons. His recovery is extremely solid. Pair this up with an excellent combo game, and he is one of the best characters in the game. From Smash 4 to Ultimate, we’ve seen change to his neutral air (now acting like Mewtwo’s) in addition to have a down air that spikes opponents. Moreever, the new engine treats him very well. This adds up to establish him as a definite top tier.
Simon/Richter Belmont
These two fighters are paired up due to their similarities to each other. Richter is essentially a carbon copy of Simon and both Belmonts possess the same power in all of their moves. As for the strengths of the characters themselves, Simon and Richter simply have the best zoning potential in the game. Their whole kit extends to a ridiculous range. Pair their insanely long normals with their two projectiles and we have an excellent character. This pair should dominate the metagame early on as players learn the matchup.
Potential
This category is for characters that have potential to become top tiers. Most of these characters either need a lot of work put into them to develop their metagames, or find themselves in a gray area where players are currently struggling to determine their strengths and weaknesses.
Falco
This fighter has gone through many changes as he goes from game to game, from being a top tier in Melee and Brawl to having little to no presence in Smash 4. Now he has gotten a whole new set of improvements that allow for him to shine. This puts him on the right track, but he is still not the easiest character to pick up. The learning curve his kit comes with will not let him rise to the top early on. Soon, his time will come.
IncineroarÂ
This fire fighting wrestler Pokémon hits like a truck. His insanely hard hitting moves make it seem like eventually he will see glory. Pair this up with his glorious counter, revenge, and his potential increases. The downfall of Incineroar is his horrendous recovery. It is going to be really hard for Incineroar players to be consistent, but eventually some player will gift us with an amazing performance.
Zelda
The princess of light has gotten a lot of buffs. Her kit still remains almost the same, but this engine benefits her. On the other hand, though, she requires a lot of precision. As players develop her metagame, she won’t produce many results, but once she is ready, things will definitively change.
Moving Forward
As Smash Ultimate is still young in its life, almost every player is going to have different opinions as to where characters land in comparison to one another. As such, don’t expect to see any definitive tier list for Smash Ultimate for quite some time. With that said, the above characters are agreed upon by many players to be some of the most solid characters the game has to offer. So what character will dominate the meta?
