After the Tekken 7 Grand Finals at Evo, a teaser trailer shows the possible new entry in the Tekken franchise.
The teaser trailer came after another trailer for the new Tekken 7 update on Aug. 17.
The Teaser
The teaser starts with a throwback to the canonical ending to Tekken 1, from the PS1 in 1994. The ending involves Kazuya Mishima throwing his father Heihachi Mishima into a volcano after defeating him. The ending has been a joke to fans for decades for its awkward presentation. However, Bandai Namco turns the endings nature in a complete 180. After a brief static, modern-day Kazuya Mishima appears with a sinister smirk and evil red devil eye glowing.
A new announcer’s voice appears to say the signature announcer tagline “Get Ready.”
The teaser ends there leaving many questions and zero answers from the developers.
Tekken director and producer Katsuhiro Harada also had little to say about the announcement. While he did appear after the teaser, he just came to roughhouse with the Evo casters who were very excited.
Despite the little news about the teaser, many fans immediately began to speculate. Some fans believe it was a teaser for a Tekken 1 remake, due to the appearance of the ending from Tekken 1. But it’s likely to draw attention to Kazuya who will be the main focus of Tekken 8’s story.
Tekken 8 Storyline
Tekken and the story revolving around the games have yet to see a proper conclusion as a whole. Most plots focus on the blood-lusted rivalry between the Mishima bloodline including Heihachi, Kazuya Mishima, and Jin Kazama. Many other side characters enter the King of Iron Fist Tournaments to seek revenge on the three series protagonists.
Tekken 7 seemingly became the conclusion for Heihachi Mishima after his defeat by his son once again. After throwing his father into the lava and finishing him off once and for all, he plans to kill his son Jin Kazama next.
Tekken 8 will definitely continue right after the end of Tekken 7 and will likely be the conclusion of the main Tekken storyline that began with the original.
Tekken even holds the Guinness World Record for the “longest-running video game storyline.” An impressive feat for a fighting game franchise, especially when much of its story isn’t told in a traditional sense.
On Aug 18. Netflix will be releasing Tekken: Bloodline, an animated series. The anime series will cover the Tekken events between Tekken 2, and Tekken 3 as a whole. Focusing on the new protagonist Jin Kazama who is seeking revenge against Ogre for killing his mother Jun Kazama.
While focusing on Tekken 3’s plot, some minor changes will be made. Most notably the appearance of Leroy Smith, a DLC character from Tekken 7, and costume changes for Nina Williams and Julia Change who are wearing their more modern outfits.
What About Tag Tournament?
The Tekken spin-off that features 2v2 tag fighting has always seen released alongside the mainline series. But it might be a bit too early for that. Tekken Tag Tournaments 1 and 2 always saw a release after three entries. After Tekken 3 we saw Tag Tournament 1, and after Tekken 6 we saw Tag Tournament 2.
If Namco Bandai follows the same release structure, it’s likely we won’t see a new Tag Tournament entry for many years.
It’ll be some time before we receive a proper trailer for the new Tekken project. More news may come from the Tekken World Tour Global Finals will also be coming back to Amsterdam on Feb. 4-5, 2023.
