To kick off the month of August, the Project L team had a few announcements to share with the fighting game community. On Monday August 1, Tom Cannon and the Project L team shared a short video to update everyone on the game’s progress. Not only will the game be free to play, but the team also shared their excitement for the latest champion to join the roster. Illaoi, the bruising top laner, will be added to Project L.

The Project L cast is currently a very short list, featuring only five champions at the moment. Darius, Jinx, Ekko, Ahri and Illaoi currently make up the entire roster. The champion roster may start small, there shouldn’t be a concern over potential new characters. League of Legends ensures that there are always new champions to add on a later date.
Project L will be an assist-based 2D fighter. For those unfmailiar, assist-based fighting games feature teams of fighters than can be swapped in and out mid-fight to gain advantages or adjust for bad matchups. Assist-based fights also allow for players to use champions not on the field to pop in and add attacks during a battle. Players will be familiar with this type of game from titles like Marvel vs. Capcom.
Illaoi is the second bruiser-type champion in Project L right after Darius. Audiences have yet to see any action or test gameplay of Illaoi, but fans can be confident that she will be bringing the pain with her iconic idol on her fist.
