The rollback netcode update for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax that much anticipation is now live for Steam and PS4. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, originally released in 2013 in Arcades in Japan, and PS3, and Xbox 360 worldwide. It since had a re-release on Steam, Switch, and Playstation 4, however, it was using the original delay netcode.
This was a disappointment for fans who were looking forward to playing online with rollback netcode. The developers of the re-release were quick to acknowledge the criticism and promise an update for the Summer of 2022.
The Update Went Live During EVO
On day one of Evo 2022, they drop the announcement that Rollback Netcode is now live. Without warning, the update is now live for Steam, and Playstation 4, however, Nintendo Switch is excluded.
While disappointing for Switch fans, this has been the case regarding rollback netcode updates on the platform. Arc System Works, the previous title on the platform, Blazblue Cross Tag Battle was able to receive a rollback update on PC and PS4, but not switch.
The reason for the exclusion isn’t clear, however, rollback is possible with titles such as Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid on every platform, including switch.
It’s likely due to the popularity of fighting games on PlayStation consoles and PC.
The re-release with the update is meant to be a definitive version of the game. All the DLC from the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, including characters, colors, and more is in the re-release. As well as the 2.0 update from arcades in Japan. The 2.0 version was originally exclusive to Japanese arcades at the time. Consoles never saw the update, that had new mechanics and balance changes.
Will There Be Crossplay?
The only feature that will not be a part of the package is crossplay between consoles and PC, even PS4 and PC. While crossplay is a feature, many would be able to enjoy, there are no plans for future updates.
Arc System Works does seem to understand why fans would want the feature. Guilty Gear -Strive- is receiving an update in Fall 2022 for crossplay between Playstation 4, Playstation 5, and Steam.
In the meantime, they are fixing some hardware issues this Summer, including reducing input delay on Playstation 5, and server connection issues on Steam.
The rollback update is also beneficial for competitive players. There is a likelihood of more online tournaments, major or small.
To access the update on steam, players must first opt-in to the beta. Find Persona 4 Arena Ultimax in your steam library, right click and go to Properties. Click on the Betas tab and enter the beta access code “p4auopenbeta03.”
Once the access code is typed in, launch the game.
Other updates include improvements to game stability and minor bug fixes.
The update should automatically be on PS4 and PS5 consoles via backward compatibility.
