In a surprising turn of events, two former Overwatch League pros form an Apex superteam. Birdring, formerly a London Spitfire and LA Gladiators player will team up with Effect, formerly a Dallas Fuel player, and together with Zelo, they will form the Apex trio for LFO.
Who is Birdring?
Probably the biggest name of the three, at least as far as Overwatch is concerned. Birdring won the inaugural season of the Overwatch League. Despite not being able to find the same level of success in the following year, Birdring still put on high-level performances for the London Spitfire. He would eventually join the Los Angles Gladiators in the end of 2020. He would play for them for about a year, eventually winning the Countdown Cup last august. Last October, he announced his retirement from Overwatch, but continued with the Gladiators as a content creator.
During his Overwatch days, he was a Widowmaker, Cassidy and Tracer specialist. So expect him to be a demon with Sniper rifles and the wingman. It will be interesting to see how his skills as a former Overwatch pro will translate into apex.
Who is Effect?
The second of the Overwatch pros to form the apex superteam, Effect, his career wasn’t as long lasting as Birdring. Effect popped up in the Overwatch scene with the Meta organization, eventually joining EnVy and then the Overwatch League team of the Dallas Fuel. Dallas underperformed for most of the first season, filled with drama and personal problems, including Effect himself. He became a content creator, staying on with Dallas for a bit longer.
Much like Birdring, he played mostly the hitscan heroes, but had a much more aggressive style. Expect him to the team’s entry fragger and possibly IGL.
Who is Zelo?
The third and final player of LFO is Zelo. Unlike the other two members of this apex superteam, he is not a former Overwatch pro. In fact, he is more of a wildcard. He hasn’t played on a pro team since may of 2021, when he last played in the APAC community cups. However, prior to that, when he played with High Quality, he was one of the better players in ALGS Korea, prior to it officially becoming APAC north, as we know it now.
It will be interesting to see how this team will perform. None of them have been playing at the higest level in any competition, with Birdring being the most recent, almost a year ago. Due to this, it is unlikely that this team will have an official invitation to the first season of next year, meaning they will have to fight their way in to qualify.
