Head coach Dirk Koetter said that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will start Jameis Winston in week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons.
The Bucs are currently on a bye week, which gives Winston a little extra time to prepare for his first start of the 2018 season.
Winston replaces Ryan Fitzpatrick, who led Tampa Bay to a 2-2 record while starting the team’s first four games. Fitzpatrick threw for 1,356 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions in his starts, but was replaced by Winston Sunday’s game against the Bears.
In relief of Fitzpatrick, Winston had 145 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, although he did complete 80% of his passes. Now in his fourth NFL season, Winston has 11,781 passing yards, 70 touchdowns and 46 interceptions on 61.1% completion for his career.
Tampa Bay will be watching how Winston performs, as he has a fifth-year option for next season that would give him a base salary of $20, 922,000. He is an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
Winston has started 45 games for the Buccaneers in his career, but was suspended for the first three games of this season for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. This suspension stemmed from an incident in March 2016, where Winston allegedly groped an Uber driver.
