Having a good fantasy draft sets a team up really well, but most of the time to win a fantasy football league, acquisitions need to be made during the season. Each week there are several players worth exploring on the waiver wire. Here are fantasy football players to add week 5. (Note: These are best used for standard scoring leagues. All players are owned in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues)
1. Tyler Allgeier, RB, Atlanta Falcons
Cordarrelle Patterson was banged up, but able to play through an injury in week 4. The Falcons still elected to give some other running backs playing time. Rookie Tyler Allgeier got some work, finishing the game with 10 carries for 84 yards and one catch for 20 yards.
Patterson’s knee injury has led him to the IR. Allgeier was the most successful on a yards-per-carry basis in week 4, so Atlanta should give him some more opportunities heading forward. He is rostered in just 16.8 percent of ESPN leagues.
2. Isiah Pacheco, RB, Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs were able to split the workload in the backfield against the Buccaneers, which resulted in both Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Isiah Pacheco being productive. Pacheco finished week 4 with 11 carries for 63 yards. The rookie had his best game since their week 1 blowout of the Cardinals.
It looks like Pacheco has earned more playing time in the backfield with his performance. He didn’t offer any pass-catching this week, but that could come soon. With Edwards-Helaire being streaky, Pacheco could see even more of the work for the Chiefs. He is rostered in just 10.5 percent of ESPN leagues.
3. Romeo Doubs, WR, Green Bay Packers
Doubs has now put up two solid weeks of production for the Packers. In week 3, he had eight catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Doubs totaled five catches for 47 yards and a touchdown against the Patriots in week 4. He also almost had another touchdown that would’ve helped the Packers win in regulation.
After an impressive preseason, Doubs has started to gain regular season trust from Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers has noted his star potential. Moving forward, Doubs should see more snaps and get more targets, which will really help his value. He is available in over 53 percent of ESPN leagues.
4. Michael Gallup, WR, Dallas Cowboys
Gallup finally returned from his torn ACL and delivered for the Cowboys, even with Cooper Rush at quarterback. He finished the game with two receptions for 24 yards and a touchdown. That is not a bad first game back from an injury that severe.
As time goes on and Dak Prescott returns, Gallup is worth being on fantasy rosters in all leagues. Picking him up now before he has a truly great performance is the smart move. Gallup is rostered in just 46.5 percent of ESPN leagues.
5. George Pickens, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers
Pickens has increasingly improved every week of the NFL season. After registering three yards in week 1, he upped that to 23 in week 2 and 39 in week 3. In the week 4 matchup against the Jets, he registered six catches for 102 yards.
The Steelers turned the game over to Kenny Pickett against the Jets after a rough start for Mitch Trubisky. Pickens was able to do some damage with Pickett at quarterback and the two rookies seem to have good chemistry. If Pickett is the quarterback going forward, it really helps the notion that Pickens should be rostered. He is currently rostered in 37.6 percent of ESPN leagues.
