Having a good fantasy draft sets a team up really well, but most of the time to win a fantasy football league, acquisitions need to be made during the season. Each week there are several players worth exploring on the waiver wire. Here are fantasy football players to add week 14. (Note: These are best used for standard scoring leagues. All players are rostered in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues)
1. Jordan Mason, RB, San Francisco 49ers
Jordan Mason was the lead guy while Christian McCaffrey was out. His usage plummeted when McCaffrey returned. In week 13, McCaffrey suffered a PCL injury and Mason was inserted into the game. Despite the team trailing for most of the game, he finished with 13 carries for 78 yards.
It was a PCL injury for McCaffrey and he is rumored to be out for the season possibly. That means Mason should fill in for at least he next few weeks. He was one of the top fantasy running backs in the league for the first four weeks of the season and can have a similar impact now. He is rostered in 41.7 percent of ESPN leagues.
2. Adam Thielen, WR, Carolina Panthers
After returning from injury, Thielen got his feet wet in week 12. In week 13, he played his best game of the season. He seemed to have a better rapport with quarterback Bryce Young. Thielen finished the game with eight catches for 99 yards and a touchdown.
With Young’s emergence at the quarterback position, Thielen could end up being his favorite target. He will fight for targets with Xavier Legette, but Thielen is a reliable veteran presence. Thielen can be picked up and started based on the matchup and situation. He is rostered in 27.3 percent of ESPN leagues.
3. Jonathon Brooks, RB, Carolina Panthers
Brooks made his NFL debut in week 12 after getting injured in his final season at the collegiate level. The Texas Longhorn got limited work, but that increased in week 13. He finished the game with six carries for 18 yards. Brooks also had three catches for 23 yards.
The Panthers did extend Chuba Hubbard recently, showing that they favor him in the backfield, but they also selected Brooks in the second round of the NFL Draft. While his recovery took longer than expected, they should use him down the stretch after using valuable draft capital on him. He can be picked up while he gets more work in the offense and started if he proves himself. Brooks is rostered in 47.6 percent of ESPN leagues.
4. Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, WR, Tennessee Titans
Westbrook-Ikhine isn’t the biggest name out there, but he has really impressed the last few weeks. He has double-digit fantasy points in four of the last five games (standard scoring). In week 13, Westbrook-Ikhine had three catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns.
He is reliant on big plays, as the most catches he has had in a game is five. Westbrook-Ikhine is converting on those big plays though. He can be picked up and possibly started, although fantasy managers will be taking a risk based on the number of targets and catches he has per game. Westbrook-Ikhine is rostered in just 19.9 percent of ESPN leagues.
5. Marquez Valdes-Scantling, WR, New Orleans Saints
Marquez Valdes-Scanting keeps on appearing on this list, as he continues to make plays. Week 13 was his worst game since week 9, the first game he officially joined the Saints. He still had two catches for 39 yards and a touchdown.
While he also is reliant on big plays, Valdes-Scantling is converting those. His great speed has made him a mismatch. He can be picked up, but starting him can be risky because of the number of targets he gets per game. Valdes-Scantling is rostered in 22.6 percent of ESPN leagues.
