The college football season is here. Every week, different news and notes will pop up, which will affect what happens on the field and off it. Here are the college football week 1 news and notes.
ACC Votes to Add Cal, Stanford and SMU
On Friday morning, the ACC voted to add Cal, Stanford and SMU to the conference starting in 2024-2025. This moves the number of schools to 18, with 17 competing in football.
Arizona State Self-Imposes Bowl Ban
Arizona State has self-imposed a bowl ban for the 2023 college football season for infractions that occurred under previous head coach Herm Edwards. It is Kenny Dillingham’s first season as head coach.
Cam Rising and Brant Kuithe’s Status up in the air vs. Florida
Utah starting quarterback Cam Rising and tight endBrant Kuithe are questionable for Thursday’s season opener against Florida.
Update: Rising is now projected to be out for the game. Bryson Barnes will start in his place.
Ryan Day Names Kyle McCord Ohio State’s Starting QB for Week 1
After a quarterback battle this offseason, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has announced that Kyle McCord will start at quarterback in week 1 against Indiana. McCord was star wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.’s teammate in high school.
Jalen Milroe Named Alabama Starter
Jalen Milroe has been named Alabama’s starting quarterback according to ESPN’s Chris Low. He won the battle with Tyler Buchner, Ty Simpson and Dylan Lonergan.
Tez Walker Not Expected to Play For UNC in Week 1
North Carolina wide receiver Tez Walker is not expected to play for UNC in their week 1 game against South Carolina. He transferred from Kent State and was initially eligible to play this season before NCAA rule changes. The school is appealing the decision of him being ineligible, but the NCAA doesn’t have an answer for them ahead of their first game.

- Texas A&M names Connor Weigman the starting quarterback.
- UCLA names Ethan Garbers their starting quarterback.
- Nebraska Tight End Arik Gilbert was arrested on burglary charges.
- Virginia edge rusher Chico Bennett Jr. is out against Tennessee this week with a knee injury.
- Iowa QB Cade McNamara is questionable for week 1 against Utah State with a right leg injury.
- Last week, it was announced Jim Harbaugh would be suspended for three games. Michigan offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore will also be suspended for the season opener stemming from an NCAA investigation.
- Houston will wear Oilers throwback-themed uniforms in their opener against UTSA.
- Marshall’s Jahsen Wint has been ruled eligible for the season after being acquitted of rape and kidnapping charges.
