Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and beaten already on the field. Preseason rankings will not be taken into consideration here. Here is College Football Playoff Bracketology September 7.
CFP Four
1. Alabama Crimson Tide (1-0)
It was no surprise that Alabama dominated an early-season neutral site game again. They dominated a ranked Miami team 44-13. Alabama should be the favorites to win it all at this point with a good offense and defense fully on display already.
This week: vs. Mercer Bears (FCS 1-0)
2. Georgia Bulldogs (1-0)
In a defensive battle, Georgia was able to come out on top against Clemson. They won 10-3, with the only touchdown coming on an interception returned for a touchdown. The win puts the SEC in a great position to possibly get two teams in the CFP. Other teams may have been ranked higher in the preseason, but Georgia earned a top-two spot on the field.
This week: vs. UAB Blazers (1-0)
3. Virginia Tech Hokies (1-0)
In an upset, Virginia Tech defeated North Carolina on Friday of week 1. North Carolina looked like they may have been overrated, but the Hokies still deserve credit for beating a highly-ranked team. The Hokies won the game 17-10 and look like they could compete in the ACC this season.
This week: vs. Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders (1-0)
4. Penn State Nittany Lions (1-0)
Penn State started last season 0-5 and then won four straight games to end the year. They got healthy over the offseason and won a Big Ten struggle of a game against Wisconsin, who was ranked 12th before the game. It was an ugly game and this rank won’t hold once other teams win some games, but for now, Penn State can feel good about their win.
This week: vs. Ball State Cardinals (1-0)
First Four Out
5. UCLA Bruins (2-0)
The Bruins hosted LSU and got a big win over a ranked team. LSU was another team that may have been ranked a little high for what they did last season, but UCLA looks like they are on a good trajectory this season. They are one of the few teams with two wins on the season, as they also defeated Hawaii in week 0.
This week: BYE
6. Iowa Hawkeyes (1-0)
Iowa thought they were going to get a tough fight from Indiana, who had a great 2020 season. That didn’t happen, as the Hawkeyes dominated from start to finish, winning 34-6. It was a good win and really sets them up well in the Big Ten West.
This week: at Iowa State Cyclones (1-0)
7. Texas Longhorns (1-0)
In Steve Sarkisian‘s first game as head coach, Texas defended their home turf against a ranked Louisiana team. They won 38-18, which was impressive given that the Ragin’ Cajuns won all but one game on their schedule in 2020. Texas had a good start and now they need to keep it going.
This week: at Arkansas Razorbacks (1-0)
8. Ohio State Buckeyes (1-0)
Yes, if preseason rankings came into account, Ohio State would be higher. They struggled in the first half and then got it all together to beat Minnesota by 14 on the road. The Buckeyes should still be one of the top title contenders in the country, but they will move up after winning bigger games.
This week: vs. Oregon Ducks (1-0)
Next Four Out
9. Oklahoma Sooners (1-0)
With an uneven performance from Spencer Rattler, Oklahoma allowed Tulane to come back and make it a close game. Oklahoma eventually got the victory 40-35. Tulane is a solid team, but Oklahoma will need to play better if they want to be a CFP contender.
This week: vs. Western Carolina Catamounts (FCS 0-1)
10. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0)
Notre Dame looked really sloppy, but they went on the road and defeated Florida State in overtime. There is a lot that needs to be improved for Notre Dame, but winning in a tough environment will give them a boost, as long as their team isn’t executed.
This week: vs. Toledo Rockets (1-0)
11. Ole Miss Rebels (1-0)
In the last game of week 1, Ole Miss dismantled Louisville. The Cardinals may not be that great of a team, but at least the Rebels didn’t purposely schedule a cupcake for the opening weekend. There will be tougher games to come, but they were very good in week 1.
This week: vs. Austin Peay Governers (FCS 1-0)
12. Nevada Wolf Pack (1-0)
Nevada got off to a rough start, but settled down and pulled off a comeback victory against Cal on the road. The Wolf Pack could have a big season ahead with this win and with Carson Strong and Romeo Doubs combining for some big plays.
This week: vs. Idaho State Bengals (FCS 0-1)
