Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and beaten already on the field. Preseason rankings will not be taken into consideration here. Here is College Football Playoff Bracketology September 25.
CFP Four
1. Georgia Bulldogs (4-0)
Georgia struggled with Kent State more than was expected, but still came away with a 17-point win. Their win over Oregon in week 1 continues to look better as the Ducks keep winning. The schedule sets up well for the Bulldogs, as they won’t have a tough game until the end of October.
This week: at Missouri Tigers (2-2)
2. Ohio State Buckeyes (4-0)
The Buckeyes breezed past Wisconsin, 52-21. They were without several key players and still won with ease, which is a good sign. How good their wins are this season remains to be seen as both Wisconsin and Notre Dame are now 2-2, but Ohio State sure looks like the top team they are right now.
This week: vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights (3-0)
3. Tennessee Volunteers (4-0)
Tennessee won their rivalry game with Florida this weekend to move to 4-0 on the season. This pairs nicely with their win over Pitt on the road early in the season. The Volunteers had a challenging early-season schedule and have fared well.
This week: BYE
4. Kentucky Wildcats (4-0)
The Wildcats move down in this week’s rankings as Tennessee also defeated Florida and the Wildcats struggled too much with Northern Illinois, despite walking away with a win. They have a lot to clean up but winning at Florida is still a solid win.
This week: at Ole Miss Rebels (4-0)
First Four Out
5. Clemson Tigers (4-0)
Clemson had their first big test of the season and came away with a overtime victory on the road against Wake Forest. Their offense was able to put up points, which is an encouraging sign of growth over last season.
This week: vs. NC State Wolfpack (4-0)
6. Penn State Nittany Lions (4-0)
The win over Central Michigan does little for Penn State’s ranking other than keep them undefeated. James Franklin’s squad does have interesting wins that came on the road over Auburn and Purdue. The schedule will get tougher, but the Nittany Lions are off to a good start.
This week: vs. Northwestern Wildcats (1-3)
7. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0)
Alabama defeated Vanderbilt pretty easily to extend their record to 4-0. Their win at Texas diminished in value after the Longhorns were defeated by Texas Tech. The ranking reflects the schedule so far for Alabama, but the Crimson Tide still look like they can achieve all their goals this season.
This week: at Arkansas Razorbacks (3-1)
8. Washington Huskies (4-0)
Washington defeated Stanford, but they move down this week’s rankings as their win over Michigan State looks much worse after the Spartans were thoroughly outplayed against Minnesota.
This week: at UCLA Bruins (4-0)
Next Four Out
9. USC Trojans (4-0)
While the Trojans didn’t look great, they were able to defeat Oregon State on the road 17-14. They are undefeated and look like they can win the Pac-12, but need to start playing better.
This week: vs. Arizona State Sun Devils (1-3)
10. NC State Wolfpack (4-0)
NC State had an easier matchup against UConn this week and won by 31 points. Their biggest win of the season appears to be Texas Tech, who just upset Texas. A lot will be known about this team after this upcoming week.
This week: at Clemson Tigers (4-0)
11. Michigan Wolverines (4-0)
The Wolverines were held out of the three previous editions of these rankings for playing such bad nonconference schedule. They defeated an undefeated Maryland team in week 4 and now push their way into the rankings.
This week: at Iowa Hawkeyes (3-1)
12. Ole Miss Rebels (4-0)
Ole Miss had a closer game with Tulsa than many expected and still need to get better quarterback play. They are undefeated though and have a good chance to prove themselves this weekend.
This week: vs. Kentucky Wildcats (4-0)
